about the Methodist Church

Cross on hillside

The Methodist Church grew out of the renewal movement begun in the eighteenth century by John Wesley, and keeps many of his distinctive emphases. We hold an inclusive theology: no-one is beyond the reach of God's love. We believe that the calling of the Methodist Church today is to respond to the gospel of God's love in Christ and to live out its discipleship in worship and mission. It does this through worship, learning and caring, service and evangelism.

Methodism has always been a grass-roots movement, and the primary unit of mission remains the circuit, a group of local churches served by a team of local preachers and ministers including the superintendent minister. Circuits are linked together into Districts, and British Methodism is united in a 'Connexion' of churches. Significant decisions are taken at the annual meeting of the Connexion known as Conference, but there are direct links from the local church to Conference and all have the opportunity to contribute.
